We are Hiring - Assistant Technician

Duke Makes is looking for an assistant technician to join our small creative team. Are you passionate about design, engineering and future tech? From making custom one offs, to engineering solutions to practical problems, we design and build a wide range of products — so no two days are the same. 

You should be ready to get stuck in, think on your feet and do some proper graft; you'll understand that not all projects can be achieved within the hours of 9 - 5. It isn’t essential that you have made things professionally before. So if  you know your way around power tools and you’re passionate about the details you might be for us.

As well as an interview there will be a short practical task where you will be asked to design and make a small item from a brief using the equipment on site.

Duke Makes Assistant Technician 

Salary: £20,000+ depending on experience  

Hours: 37.5 pw - flexible worked on time in lieu basis.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Completing CNC, Laser cutting, 3D printing and Vinyl cutting jobs
  • Making and building projects using CNC, Laser, 3D printers and standard workshop machines and tools
  • Maintaining machinery, general waste management, keeping up to date with H&S requirements and documentation as well as assisting with the smooth running of the studio
  • Maintaining and making improvements to our studio space as we grow
  • Ensuring compliance on health and safety procedures
  • Identifying, proposing and implementing any improvements to studio space or making systems
  • Checking material stock levels and advising studio manager/general manager if orders are required
  • Documenting progress of projects for website and marketing 
  • Occasionally dealing with clients to organise delivery/collection of products
  • Dealing with suppliers to order maintenance supplies and machine tooling

Qualifications, Skills and personality Traits

  • Proficient in Adobe packages including Illustrator
  • Proficient in 3D design packages including Sketchup or Fusion 360
  • Experience designing and making in wood, metal and plastic
  • Knowledgeable and experienced  using standard hand and power tools 
  • An interest in digital fabrication, CAD and new tech
  • A keen eye for detail and quality work 
  • Ready with solutions to achieve project goals
  • Always looking for the next job, be it a design and build project , a stock check or giving the studio a full clean and tidy
  • A positive attitude and sense of fun 
  • Experience with digital manufacturing techniques including CNC, Laser cutting, 3D printing (desirable)
  • Experience with manual fabrication techniques including woodwork and metalwork (desirable)

Mental tasks

The role involves a range of mental tasks, a good memory for numbers and our inventory of materials is always useful. Being able to work autonomously and prioritise tasks to ensure competing deadlines are met is essential.

Physical tasks

The role involves a variety of physical tasks including lifting and carrying and standing for longer periods, for which a general all-round level of fitness is required.
